Fascination Chemistry: 15th Chemistry Alumni and Graduate Day

At the 15th Chemistry Alumni and Graduate Day on June 25, 2022, the best graduates of this year's chemistry programmes at the University of Bayreuth were honoured. The Alumni Association CSG e.V., the Otto Warburg Chemistry Foundation and the Faculty of Biology, Chemistry and Geosciences had invited all of this year's chemistry graduates with their family members to the joint celebration at the Arvena Kongress Hotel. Greetings were given by Christof Bauer M.Sc. (1st Chairman of CSG e.V.), Prof. Dr. Jürgen Senker (Vice Dean of the Faculty of Biology, Chemistry and Geosciences) and Andreas Zippel (Second Mayor of the City of Bayreuth).

The keynote speech was given by Prof. Dr. Jürgen Schram, Professor of Instrumental and Chemical Analysis at the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences in Krefeld, on the topic of "Man, Chemistry, Society - Cultural History of a Love-Hate Relationship". Afterwards, the best students of the year received their certificates: Simon Freund in the bachelor's programme "Chemistry", Sabrina Dirnberger in the master's programme "Natural Products & Drug Chemistry", Fabian Lukas in the master's programme "Materials Chemistry and Catalysis" and Jonas Schwan in the master's programme "Polymer Science".

Dr. Kevin Ament was honoured for the best doctoral thesis in chemistry. He investigated catalysts that use the layered silicate hectorite as a support material and extended the principle of layered intercalation of nanoparticles to another substrate material, titanate. He has thus made important contributions to catalysis research.

Furthermore, Jakob Mirschel from the Graf-Münster-Gymnasium in Bayreuth received the prize for the best seminar paper of the high schools of Upper Franconia in the field of chemistry. A light show by event artist Klaus Mayr alias "Kaa" crowned the festive event.
