International competitions, leading delegations in India and Poland, and at the same time completing a Master’s degree at the University of Bayreuth – Janina Wey combines academic education and voluntary commitment in university sport in a remarkable way. Janina Wey is currently studying for a Master’s degree in Sports Economics at the University of Bayreuth. Prior to this, she completed her Bachelor’s degree there and simultaneously pursued a teacher training programme. She first became involved with the German University Sports Federation (adh) during a compulsory internship towards the end of her Bachelor’s studies. The adh is the umbrella organisation for university sport in Germany, bringing together and representing higher education institutions nationwide. It operates at the intersection of sport, education and politics and offers a wide range of activities in competitive sport, education and health.
During her internship, Janina Wey worked primarily in the field of international competitive sport. In 2024, she was involved in overseeing a total of 16 international university championships. She also accompanied two of these competitions on site: the Triathlon World University Championships (WUC) in Poland and the WUC Shooting Sport in India. There, she took on the role of Head of Delegation and served as a point of contact for athletes and coaches, with the aim of creating optimal conditions for sporting success.
Her continued involvement developed from this internship: since 2024, Janina Wey has been a member of the student board of the adh (the board is composed in equal parts of full-time staff and students), an honorary position with a two-year term of office. The student board represents the interests of students within the federation and participates in numerous committees. Several board meetings take place each year, partly online and partly in person, supplemented by various forms of representation of the association, including in political contexts, at the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB), the German Sports Youth (DSJ), and at German University Championships. In 2026, Bayreuth itself will host several competitions, including beach volleyball and triathlon.
She also addresses these topics in her academic work: her Master’s thesis focuses on sustainable sports facility construction at universities in Germany. Looking ahead, Janina Wey can well envisage a professional future in university sport, within sports federations, or in the international sports sector.
