New university group for artificial intelligence

The founders of the new university group Bayreuth AI Assocation (from left): Andreas Karasenko, Pascal Fechner and Renato Mio.

The Bayreuth AI Association is an association of students who are enthusiastic about artificial intelligence. Founded in the winter semester 2023/2024, the university group aims to promote exchange on the topic of artificial intelligence with a focus on the practical implementation of algorithms. The Bayreuth AI Association was founded by Renato Mio, doctoral student at the Chair of Digital Health, Andreas Karasenko, research assistant at the Chair of Marketing & Innovation, and Pascal Fechner, external doctoral student at the Chair of Information Systems and Value-Oriented Process Management and co-founder of the start-up inContAlert. The university group cooperates with the FIM Research Institute for Information Management (Prof. Röglinger).

UBTaktuell: Mr. Fechner, how did the idea for this university group come about?

The idea was born at a meeting between the three founders when we realized that people who are involved in machine learning often teach themselves, for example through their own projects. Each person has their own experience in programming machine learning projects and obtains information from a wide variety of sources (websites such as Stack Overflow, papers, blogs, etc.). A platform for sharing these experiences would help everyone to learn from each other and get new food for thought.

Who is this university group aimed at and what qualifications should you have?

Everyone is welcome here - from first semester students to professors. The purpose of the university group is to exchange experiences in the practical use of machine learning. Basic knowledge and initial experience in programming machine learning algorithms are therefore an advantage.

How do the Bayreuth AI Association meetings work?

We meet every two weeks on Tuesday evenings. At the beginning of each meeting, we discuss the latest developments in the fields of AI, machine learning and computer science. The rest of the meeting depends on the type of meeting: AI-nstrucion or AI-ntellectuals. AI-nstruction is a technical approach based on workshops or presentations, while AI-ntellectuals is more of a discussion-based approach. The former aims to transfer experience-based knowledge to students interested in applying AI and machine learning in their own research projects. The latter promotes interdisciplinary discussions and the exchange of ideas. The current dates can be found on our website and in our WhatsApp group.

The next meeting will take place on Tuesday, June 4, 6-8 p.m. in room S65 in the RW building. All interested parties are welcome.

Bayreuth AI Association
