European Research Diversity in Engineering Sciences on Campus
In April, the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Bayreuth once again showcased its broad research diversity at what was by now the 5th EU Day. At the event, 26 EU‑funded projects were presented through specialist talks and poster presentations.
The eleven institutions behind these projects highlighted in particular the extensive network offered by the Faculty of Engineering: from high‑performance AI assistance for SMEs to the transfer of knowledge to rural regions of Europe aimed at counteracting “brain drain”, a wide range of forward‑looking topics was represented.
The event was opened and introduced by the Dean, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Stephan Tremmel, who expressed his enthusiasm for the outstanding research carried out within the Faculty. The second welcoming address by Prof. Dr. Nina Nestler, Vice-President for Internationalisation, vividly illustrated the level of achievement behind these high-calibre research topics. Among other things, she congratulated the Faculty on its high success rate in securing ERC funding, which is reserved for particularly excellent research projects. In his welcoming remarks, Dr. Panteleimon Panagiotou from the Engineering Sciences Division of the Bavarian Research Alliance encouraged the many attendees to draw inspiration from this impressive diversity of projects.

EU Day provided more than 100 participants from industry, academia and society with a space for exchange and inspiration. A particularly valuable contribution was made by representatives of the four major funding bodies – ESF+, ERDF, Interreg A and Interreg B – as well as the university’s Research Funding Service Unit. Through personal consultations, participants were able to obtain information on support for project development, new funding frameworks and the specific modalities of the various funding schemes.

Looking back on this successful day filled with positive energy, the Faculty of Engineering is already looking forward to the next EU Day, featuring numerous research topics that will play a significant role in shaping the future. The personal discussions held during this EU Day further reinforced the strong sense of togetherness within a well‑connected Europe.
