Bayreuth Financial Markets Symposium on crypto currencies

On 19 November 2021, the research institute for banking law and bank politics and the research institute CoCapT jointly organised the 9th Bayreuth Financial Markets Symposium on „Crypto currencies – legal and economic perspectives“. More than 70 professors, Ph.D. students, students and experts in the field were in attendance.

The Bayreuth Financial Markets Symposium has been organized since 2011. It is intended to bring business and academia together and educate a broad audience on current financial markets topics. In 2021, crypto currencies was chosen as the topic because crypto currencies are becoming more and more important. Moreover, preparations are underway at EU level for a regulation of crypto currencies as well as for a digital Euro.

Dr. Ulrich Bindseil (ECP) presented the plans for a digital Euro and looked at crypto currencies from a central bank perspective.

Rok Žvelc (DG FISMA, European Commission) presented the Commission’s proposal for a Regulation on Markets in Crypto-assets (MiCAR) and the Commission’s proposal on a pilot regime market infrastructures based on DLT.

Prof. Christian Catalini (Diem Association) talked about stablecoins, interoperability and competition.

Afterwards, the three speakers discussed the legal and economic opportunities and challenges in the field of cryptocurrencies and digital central bank money with the participants.
