UBTaktuell: Who can apply for the GO Forschung Award?

Dr Elena Köstner: Students at the University of Bayreuth who address gender, gender relations and/or gender roles in their theses (e.g. master's thesis) from an intersectional perspective, or who conduct a systematic, intersectional gender relevance assessment of the subject matter, are eligible to apply for the GO Forschung Award.

The thesis may have been written in previous years. The thesis should already have been graded by the submission deadline, but this is not a requirement.

UBTaktuell: How does the application process work? When is the application deadline?

Dr. Elena Köstner: There is a link to the online form on the homepage https://www.frauenbeauftragte.uni-bayreuth.de/de/go-forschung/award/index.html. Students can use this to register and upload a PDF of their thesis. The deadline for submissions is 30 October each year. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.

UBTaktuell: What is the prize?

Dr. Elena Köstner: The GO Forschung Award comes with a prize of 500 euros.

UBTaktuell: Who decides on the winner?

Dr. Elena Köstner: A jury made up of University of Bayreuth staff decides on the award. As head of the GO Forschung project, I coordinate this process and am available to answer questions from the jury and students.

UBTaktuell: How long has the award been around?

Dr. Elena Köstner: The GO Forschung Award has been around since 2024. In the next few years, the prize money will be funded by the GO Forschung project, and after 2028, thankfully, by the University Association.

UBTaktuell: When will the winner be announced and when will the award be presented?

Dr. Elena Köstner: The decision on who will receive the GO Forschung Award 2025 will be made in November. The award ceremony will then take place during the GeQuInDi annual conference, which this year will focus on the topic of ‘Contingency, Power and Data Gaps.’ The international annual conference will take place from 10 to 12 December at the Open Innovation Lab (Zapf Building 1, Nürnberger Straße). The award ceremony is scheduled for 10 December. The preliminary conference programme can be found here.

GO Forschung (Gender – Offensive – Research) is part of the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) funding guideline ‘Focus on Gender Aspects’. The aim of the funding guideline, and thus of GO Research, is to support researchers in considering and implementing gender aspects in their research projects from an intersectional perspective, as this is what distinguishes excellent research.

However, GO Forschung is not only aimed at young researchers (doctoral students and postdocs+), but also at super early career researchers, i.e. master's students, as they will be the ones shaping the research of tomorrow.
