50 years of the International Club for the University of Bayreuth
Since 1976, the International Club for the University of Bayreuth (IC) has been enriching life on campus and in the city. With almost 200 members, the IC is one of the oldest and most established support associations at the University of Bayreuth. Just one year after the university was founded, the IC was established as a registered non-profit association to bring together international guests, researchers and their families and help them settle in Bayreuth – at that time, primarily by offering opportunities to meet and support each other in a family-like setting.
Today, the IC focuses on promoting social and cultural exchange between international guests, members of the university and members of the International Club. In particular, international doctoral students, postdocs, junior and senior scholars, researchers, professors, visiting lecturers, fellows, and staff are supported in getting to know Bayreuth quickly, making contacts, and integrating themselves into both the university and the city in the long term. The International Club sees itself as an important bridge between the university and the city's community.
The IC works closely with the International Office, Welcome Services, and the Graduate School and actively supports the University of Bayreuth's internationalisation strategy. Supported by volunteers, the club organises a diverse programme of events for members and external guests throughout the year. These include welcome parties at the beginning of the semester, cultural excursions, visits to museums and exhibitions, city and nature tours, hikes, international summer evenings, St. Nicholas celebrations, and other family-friendly and intercultural events.
In addition, since 2016, the IC has awarded the annual IC Prize for outstanding young international scientists, endowed with 1,200 euros. The prize is awarded not only for excellent scientific achievements, but also for special social or voluntary commitment. The award ceremony takes place during the University of Bayreuth's annual President's Dinner. The International Club is also involved in supporting international students through the Germany Scholarship. In its anniversary year, the International Club is adding additional quarterly highlights to its established annual events.
Current information, dates, and anniversary activities are published on an ongoing basis on the International Club's website: www.internationaler-club.uni-bayreuth.de
