Scholarship is also an honour
Prof Dr Alex Plajer has been Junior Professor of Macromolecular Chemistry at the University of Bayreuth since the end of 2023. He has now been honoured with a scholarship from the Daimler and Benz Foundation.
"The special thing about this scholarship is that only a fraction of the applicants are considered and that young scientists from all departments can apply," says Prof Dr Alex Plajer in an interview with UBTaktuell. The scholarship not only means financial support for the project "Cooperative inorganic catalysis for degradable block polymers", but is also a sign of appreciation for Prof Plajer's scientific work to date.
Plastics are a central component of our modern society. However, the majority of these materials consist of binding chains that are difficult to degrade. In his research, Plajer is pursuing the goal of developing more easily degradable alternatives. "It will also be necessary, not only for reasons of sustainability but also for economic reasons, that the raw materials of future materials can be obtained from easily available and renewable sources or free waste products from other industries," states the foundation's justification for selecting Plajer. "In response to these challenges, the project focuses on the use of industrial residues such as carbon dioxide and elemental sulphur as building blocks to produce degradable functional materials."

In 1986, Daimler-Benz AG, now Daimler Truck AG and Mercedes-Benz Group AG, established the "Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz Foundation" in memory of the two company founders. In 2010, it was renamed the "Daimler and Benz Foundation". It is a foundation with legal capacity under civil law and has assets of around 125 million euros. Annual funding of around 3.5 million euros is currently available. The head office is located in the Carl Benz House in Ladenburg, Baden, the former home of the Benz family.
The foundation awards scholarships to post-doctoral students and junior professors with the aim of strengthening the autonomy and creativity of the next generation of scientists. Every year, it also awards the "Bertha Benz Prize" to a young female engineer who has distinguished herself with an outstanding dissertation.
