Prof. Dr. Shoubhik Das started his academic career in his home country India, where he first earned a Bachelor's and finally a Master of Science in Chemistry. His doctorate under Prof. Matthias Beller at the Leibniz Institute for Catalysis e. V. brought him to Germany for the first time. His PhD was in the field of catalysis research. After this, Prof. Das continued his academic career and worked at the University of Cambridge and at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland, where he deepened his understanding of sustainability in chemistry.

His research focus is particularly on sustainability. "Sustainability is close to my heart. Research on sustainable, 'green' chemistry is a concern of mine," he says. At the University of Antwerp (Belgium), from where Prof. Das comes to Bayreuth, he led a research group that was specialised in green chemistry. Green chemistry is the term used to describe the kind of chemistry that tries to curb pollution, save energy and thus produce in the most environmentally friendly way possible.

"I am looking forward to working at the University of Bayreuth," says Das. "The diversity and integrity of the people distinguishes the University of Bayreuth. I also like the interdisciplinary profile of the university."

Prof. Dr. Shoubhik Das took over the professorship for Organic Chemistry I on 1 August and will teach both in the Bachelor's and Master's programmes from the winter semester onwards.
