With the award of the Bavarian State Medal for the Environment, the Bavarian State Ministry of the Environment and Consumer Protection honours the extraordinary commitment of Prof. Dr. Heike Feldhaar, Professor of Animal Population Ecology at the University of Bayreuth. Her scientific focus is on researching the effects of man-made environmental factors on insects – a topic of utmost ecological relevance in times of global insect decline. This commitment was made tangible in the laudatory speech: "Her heart beats for bees, beetles and co.! She conducts excellent research in this field. This is worth its weight in gold, especially now – in times of insect decline."

In addition to her research, Prof. Feldhaar is also involved in science communication. Feldhaar is also active in practical nature conservation: she supports the Bayreuth-based association Die Summer, which is committed to protecting pollinating insects, and serves as a deputy member of the Nature Conservation Advisory Council of the Government of Upper Franconia.

With her interdisciplinary work, her passion for nature, and her commitment to education and awareness, Prof. Dr. Heike Feldhaar is an outstanding figure at the University of Bayreuth – and a role model for sustainable commitment in research and society. ‘You are doing outstanding work in various areas to protect the environment and nature! I thank you for your exemplary commitment,’ the minister continued. Prof. Dr. Heike Feldhaar received the Bavarian State Medal for outstanding services to the environment on Tuesday, 14 October 2025.
