Bayreuth's Contribution at the Federal Level

ELSA, the European Law Students’ Association, connects students and young lawyers worldwide. In Germany, approximately 14,500 members are active in 43 local chapters. ELSA also has a strong presence at the University of Bayreuth, with about 400 members. The association’s goal is to supplement legal studies with practical opportunities. These include, in particular, law firm events, moot courts, and soft-skills training—such as negotiation techniques or client meetings.

Emma Wahl brings extensive experience from her previous work at ELSA Bayreuth, where she served as president. In this role, she was responsible, among other things, for external communications as well as recruiting and supporting partners. “You grow into the responsibilities,” she says, describing her journey from her first regular get-together to the national executive board.

On the National Executive Board, her focus is now on supporting local faculty groups as well as on organizational and structural issues. This also includes topics such as data protection, association organization, and providing support for local challenges. “We want to be reliable points of contact for all faculty groups,” says the Bayreuth student.

The new role entails a high degree of responsibility and a significant time commitment. In addition to regular meetings throughout Germany, international events are also a mandatory part of the role. ELSA Germany plays an important role in the international network and represents German students at the European level.

Despite her intense commitment, Emma Wahl continues her law studies at the University of Bayreuth, balancing her academic work with her volunteer activities. She has a clear message for other students: “You just have to dare to take the plunge. Nobody’s perfect—and getting involved often starts with that first small step.”

By joining the National Executive Board, Emma Wahl is continuing the long tradition of student engagement at the University of Bayreuth. At the same time, she aims to bring new ideas to the future development of ELSA Germany. After more than ten years, Emma Wahl is the first law student from Bayreuth to be elected to the National Executive Board.
