UBT is looking for tutors for the ‘AI Tutorials Bavaria’ programme
The University of Bayreuth is taking part in the Bavaria-wide ‘AI Tutorials Bavaria’ programme and is coordinating it at the Centre for University Teaching in collaboration with BayZIEL. Lecturers can now apply for a student AI tutor for a specific teaching project. The deadline for applications at the University of Bayreuth is Monday 29 June 2026.
Artificial intelligence is transforming learning and teaching at universities. The ‘AI Tutorials Bavaria’ programme supports students and lecturers in using AI in a considered and subject-specific manner within their studies and teaching. The UBT is now looking for lecturers who would like to work with a student tutor to implement a specific AI project in their teaching.
Networking across different types of higher education institutions
One of the programme’s strengths is the collaboration across different types of higher education institutions. Participants include universities, universities of applied sciences, technical universities and art colleges from across Bavaria. This fosters an exchange between institutions and disciplines that would not be possible at any single higher education institution. The programme is jointly coordinated by the Centre for Higher Education Teaching (ZHL) at the University of Bayreuth and the Bavarian Centre for Innovative Teaching (BayZIEL). The UBT thus plays a central role in coordination across Bavaria.
The programme is structured as a partnership in which a student AI tutor and a academic mentor work together on a specific, subject-specific AI application, learning from one another in the process. Every AI application begins with the pedagogical question of the learning objective and the skill to be developed.
The tutors receive training, are connected with a network across Bavaria and are supported throughout the entire duration of the project. No prior knowledge of AI is required. However, the teacher should be willing to engage with the topic alongside the tutor.
Which projects are eligible for funding
The positions are to be deliberately linked to specific teaching projects, such as core compulsory modules within a degree programme. A convincing application should include three elements:
- A specific implementation scenario, specifying the module, degree programme and learning or assessment format, as well as a clear minimum and desired objective.
- A committed lecturer or supervisor who actively supports the project and sets aside approximately one hour per week for discussion.
- A willingness to engage with AI, although no prior technical knowledge is required. Projects that extend beyond the teaching of a single individual and initiate broader development within a degree programme or academic department are particularly welcome.
Projects that go beyond the teaching of a single individual and stimulate broader development within a degree programme or academic department are particularly welcome. There is flexibility regarding where the post is based – for example, within a chair, an academic department or a research group, or within a central unit – depending on what best suits the project.
How to apply
Please complete the application form on the ki-tutorien.bayern website and send it to Jonas.Wuerdinger@uni-bayreuth.de and VP-lehre@uni-bayreuth.de by Monday 29 June 2026 inclusive. In the form, please describe the planned implementation scenario (context and objective) and state the department, subject area, degree programme and the contact person. The selection of the two centrally funded tandems will be made in consultation with the Centre for University Teaching.
They will then be reported collectively to the Bavaria-wide programme coordination team. Furthermore, self-funded positions are expressly welcome, for example through chairs, subject groups or faculties. They will participate fully in the training and networking activities and will be supported throughout the entire duration of the programme.
