The first alumni of the Faculty of Life Sciences in Kulmbach

The dynamic development of the faculty has continued unabated since coronavirus: In April 2021, we introduced the Master's degree program “Global Food, Nutrition and Health M.Sc.”, and in October we finally started the first face-to-face study program in Kulmbach - including the introduction of the Bachelor's degree program “Food and Health Sciences B.Sc.” . In December 2021, the purchase of the land for the new building was approved by the state parliament's budget committee. In July 2022, Kulmbach residents were able to see the premises for the first time at “Campus Day” and at the start of the ‘Kulmbacher Stadtgespräche’ lecture series. In October, students and staff moved into the faculty rooms in the ‘Alte Spinnerei’. 2023 and 2024 were characterized by the architectural competition for the new faculty building in Kulmbach.

These are the study programmes we offer in Kulmbach:

Food and Health Sciences (B.Sc.)

The German-language Bachelor's degree course in Food and Health Sciences started in the winter semester 2021/22. This interdisciplinary degree course combines content from the natural sciences, social sciences, economics and law for a holistic perspective on solving complex challenges in the areas of food, nutrition and health. Our students learn to understand current global challenges from a holistic and interdisciplinary perspective and to develop forward-looking solutions.

Global Food, Nutrition and Health (M.Sc.)

The English-language Master's degree program “Global Food, Nutrition and Health” was introduced in the summer semester 2021 and offers an interdisciplinary education for global decision-makers at the interface between global health and the world food system. It combines insights from health and nutritional sciences with a social science perspective based on political science, law, sociology and public health. The course is suitable for students with a Bachelor's degree in nutrition and/or health sciences.

Food Quality and Safety (M.Sc.)

The English-language Master's degree course “Food Quality and Safety” started teaching at the Kulmbach campus in the winter semester 2020/21. This degree program is interdisciplinary and combines a focus on natural sciences (e.g. biochemistry and physiology of nutrition, biology of crops and animals, food chemistry, food microbiology and toxicology) with roughly equal proportions of law and economics. The course is suitable for students with a Bachelor's degree in natural sciences

Food System Sciences (M.Sc.)

The English-language Master's degree program “Food System Sciences” is new for winter semester 24/25. It covers various aspects of the complex food system and provides students with a comprehensive insight into the interfaces between analytics in life sciences, nutritional physiology, food law and bioeconomics with subsequent specialization in one of the disciplines mentioned. The program is suitable for students with a Bachelor's degree in, for example, nutritional sciences, health sciences, natural sciences, social sciences, economics, business, life sciences or law.
