Certificate of Intercultural Mediation
The "Intercultural Mediation" certificate is intended for students who wish to prove that they have gained intercultural experience on campus, in various courses and during study-related stays abroad - an important aspect for many employers or providers of internships.
The target group is all University of Bayreuth students who spend their time on our international campus crossing language borders for the sake of intercultural exchange, and actively participate as intercultural mediators. The certificate proves that someone has been active on the ground as an intercultural mediator on the University of Bayreuth campus, has acquired intercultural mediation skills in various courses during their studies, and has been able to gain intercultural experience during a study-related stay abroad. In this way, the ability to communicate across languages and cultures can be concisely documented. International students who spend a semester at the Bayreuth campus can also obtain the certificate. The certificate can be combined with that of the International Office.
Since the beginning of the semester (2022 summer semester), it has been possible to apply for the certificate using a form on the Language Centre's homepage.
The certificate is divided into three modules. At least two of these three modules must be completed.
Module 1 The Ambassador Component serves as proof of intercultural commitment on campus. What is being recognized here is the willingness to act as a mediator of one's own language and culture.
Module 2 Academic Component & Language Practice sensitises students to the prerequisites of reflected intercultural practice through relevant academic courses and through the acquisition of practical language skills in courses offered by the Language Centre.
Module 3 International Experience documents the student’s practical experience abroad. Module 3, in contrast to Module 1 and Module 2, is optional. This means that University of Bayreuth students can prove their international and intercultural orientation with this certificate even before starting a semester abroad, and thus increase their chances of being awarded a study place abroad.
A total of 30 certificate points are required for the awarding of the certificate. Certificate points are awarded on the basis of a workload calculation. So those who are involved in a language tandem or as a buddy, participate in international university groups, take various language courses, and complete a semester abroad are eligible for the certificate. Students can find out which certificates are required for individual achievement in the three modules in the module overview
Once all the required achievements have been amassed, the certificate can be applied for using the online form on the Language Centre's homepage. The completed form, together with the required supporting documents, is then to be sent by e-mail to the Language Lounge. The achievement and evidence will then be checked, and students will be notified as soon as the certificate is ready for collection.
