"It was clear to me that if I went to Germany, it would be to Bayreuth," says Prof. Dr Johanna Thoma. She came to Bayreuth as Professor of Ethics on 1 March 2023. Previously, Prof. Dr. Johanna Thoma was a professor at the London School of Economics. Thoma did her bachelor's degree in Oxford before completing a master's degree in Philosophy and Economics in Rotterdam. During her doctoral phase, she was a visiting researcher at various universities[3] and received her doctorate from the University of Toronto. Since 2016, Prof. Dr. Johanna Thoma has worked at the London School of Economics.
During her time as a doctoral student, Thoma was already a guest lecturer in Bayreuth. "Interdisciplinarity is a great asset and very important for my research," says Thoma. The Philosophy and Economics programme, for example, is an excellent example for her of how her research can also be implemented in teaching.
Prof. Dr. Johanna Thoma researches at the interface of philosophy, economics and ethics. "I would like to better understand what morality and rationality demand of us, both individually and collectively, when we don't know what the future will bring," she says. In doing so, Thoma is also concerned with the responsible use of artificial intelligence.
