Show premiere with a signal effect: Bayreuth's first campus game show sets standards – and is only the beginning

Four contestants, one presenter: the picture shows (from left) the contestants Johannes, Finja, presenter Anton, Leo and Annalena.

The show combines quiz and skill games related to the Mensa, campus and everyday student life, embedded in a full-fledged live production with five cameras, a band, a presenter and around 90 participants. Despite minor technical glitches – an overheated server caused a brief moment of nervousness – the recording went smoothly. ‘We proved that it works,’ says Shaghafi, looking back. The atmosphere in the studio was accordingly exuberant, curious, loud – and ultimately euphoric. The post-production also demonstrated how professionally the team had worked. Five cameras had to be synchronised, a dramatic edit created, 13 audio tracks mastered and the entire material colour-corrected. Only then could the programme go online. The response was overwhelmingly positive – both from the audience and from the supervising lecturers.

The internal debriefing revealed one thing above all else: astonishment that such a complex format could be realised in just three months – interrupted by the Christmas period. For Shaghafi, the project was not only his final thesis, but also personal proof that large-scale productions are possible at university: ‘Many people had doubts about whether it would work. Now we can see that it does. And I am really grateful to the entire team for their tremendous commitment to the project.’

Puya Shagafi had the idea for the project ‘Who will be the canteen champion?’. Now he and his dedicated team are dreaming of a sequel. They will then be looking for the ‘university champion’.

But it doesn't stop at a thank you: the media studies student can well imagine continuing the show, possibly even establishing it as a permanent fixture. Shaghafi will remain at the university until 2027 and would like to lead the production again. Parts of the team have also signalled their willingness to participate. A further development of the format is conceivable – for example, a ‘University Champion’ show that not only covers canteen topics but also the entire campus. Whether these plans can be put into practice remains to be seen. One thing is clear, however: the show has attracted attention – both internally and externally. Shaghafi has already signed it up for a media award from the Bavarian State Office for New Media. If the production attracts attention there, the format could gain additional momentum.

For the university, the show would be more than just entertainment: it showcases campus life, connects degree programmes, creates identification – and highlights what student media practice can achieve.

The audience was also allowed to participate in the game show, which was recorded in the media lab of the ‘Research Centre for Society, Technology and Ecology in Africa’ (FZA). The show was completed a few days ago and can be viewed on YouTube (link below).
