"Materials and substances are boring, what are they and who needs them? Do you think so or have you heard this from others? Then it's high time you and those around you were inspired by the fascination of materials science and materials engineering," is how the Studientag Materialwissenschaft und Werkstofftechnik e.V. (Materials Science and Engineering Study Day) advertises participation in a video competition. Bayreuth students took part and, above all, impressed the jury: Stephan Kuntze as the main actor, directed by Lucas Pelchen with cameraman Viktor Stetinger and sound engineer Quang Anh Pham, won 2nd place with prize money of 300 euros.
"I took part because the competition sounded like a fun opportunity to inspire students and (as yet) non-specialists to immerse themselves in materials science and thus attract more people to my degree course," says Stephan Kuntze, who is currently doing his Master's in Materials Science at the Chair of Metallic Materials at the University of Bayreuth under Prof. Dr.-Ing. Uwe Glatzel and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Anke Silvia Ulrich. Lucas Pelchen is doing his doctorate, Stetinger is a research assistant and Quang Anh Pham is a trainee at the chair.
"The biggest challenge was the time pressure - the video had to be shot within a day, which meant that the shoot was also in the final phase of my Bachelor's thesis. The only mishaps were my slips of the tongue and text stumbles, which made one or two cuts necessary," reports Stephan Kuntze and announces: "The prize money will be used to invite everyone involved to the chair for a beer to celebrate the successful completion of the video and my Bachelor's thesis.
The video competition "Materials: Who needs something like that?" was launched by three societies: the "Bundesvereinigung Materialwissenschaft und Werkstofftechnik (BVMatWerk)", the "Studientag MatWerk (StMW)" and the "Deutsche Gesellschaft für Materialkunde (DGM)".
