The Chair of Food Law and the Research Centre for Food Law (FLMR) at the University of Bayreuth, together with the Bavarian Brewery Museum in Kulmbach's Mönchshof, invited participants to discuss sustainability trends in the beer industry. Representatives of the federal and state ministries, the Bundestag, Landtag and European Parliament, science and business looked at the issue from all sides.

The conference goes back to an idea of the Chair of Food Law at the new Faculty of Life Sciences: Nutrition, Food and Health at the University of Bayreuth in Kulmbach. Part of their interdisciplinary approach, which is unique in Germany, is to network with actors outside the academic world. Successfully, because representatives of maltsters in Bavaria or malting barley growers, for example, accepted the invitation. There was unanimous agreement that a cross-sectoral exchange is particularly important in times of energy scarcity, political sustainability demands and strongly changing consumer behaviour.

The Mönchshof was the ideal place for this: it is considered a cultural-historical showcase of Kulmbach as a food location, as it houses the Bavarian Brewery Museum, the Bavarian Bakery Museum and the German Spice Museum as well as an educational museum centre connected to the museums. With over 3,000 square metres of exhibition space, the Bavarian Brewery Museum is one of the largest specialised museums on beer.
