Winner of the 2020 Bavarian Female Engineers Award comes from Bayreuth
In September 2020, Science Minister Bernd Sibler honoured five young Bavarian women scientists for their outstanding university degrees and doctorates in the field of engineering sciences. One of them was Dr.-Ing. Michaela Schubert, who works at the Functional Materials research group at the University of Bayreuth (currently on parental leave).
Every year, the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and Art awards five prizes for outstanding university degrees or doctorates to female engineering students at Bavarian colleges and universities. The prizes are valued at € 2,000 each. The aim of the award is to honour the impressive achievements of female students and young female scientists in their subject area. At the same time, the intention is to encourage other women to study engineering sciences. This year, the prizewinners come from Augsburg University of Applied Sciences, Munich University of Applied Sciences, TH Aschaffenburg University of Applied Sciences, the Julius Maximilian University of Würzburg, and the University of Bayreuth. They cover the fields of electrical engineering, information technology, computer science, and functional materials.
Dr. Schubert is working on aerosol-based cold deposition for the production of layer-based NTC thermistor components. "Powder Aerosol Deposition” allows dense ceramic layers to be be applied to very different types of materials, such as steel, glass, silicon, and even plastics. The work was conducted as part of a project funded by the Bavarian Research Foundation together with the industrial partner Vishay. "This prize," says Prof. Dr. Ralf Moos, Chair of Functional Materials, "honours the outstanding performance of Dr. Schubert, which I am very pleased to see. However, it also draws attention to the field of coating technologies, an area in which we are achieving great success, together with industrial partners, among others".
