During their studies, students usually focus on their own field of study. Starting in the winter semester 2023/24, the University of Bayreuth will offer a newly designed Studium Generale, reveals Prof. Dr. Martin Huber, Vice President Teaching and Students, to help students look beyond their own subject area. There is already an advance treat in the summer semester: these are the first two events of the Bayreuth Lectures.

"The aim is to offer students the opportunity of comprehensive general education and low-threshold access to highly topical socially relevant subject complexes," says Huber. The topics for the lectures come from the areas of sustainability, philosophy of science, gender & diversity, digital world and entrepreneurship & innovation.

The first Bayreuth Lecture will now take place on 15 May 2023 at 6 pm. The target audience is students and the entire university public. "It is not infotainment, but a lecture on a scientific level," emphasises Huber. Nevertheless, the topics will be prepared by the lecturers in such a way that it will be understandable for students of all subjects.

The principle of the Bayreuth Lectures is that a colleague from the university is the host. This person either invites an external subject colleague or brings an area of application closer to the students through people from practice. The host moderates the evening and asks critical questions.

In the first lecture, Prof. Dr. Mirco Schönfeld welcomes a colleague from the Technical University of Munich. Prof. Dr. Jürgen Pfeffer will then speak about "Dynamics of Social Media and their Social Impact".

Prof. Dr. Eva Jakob and Prof. Dr. Rebecca Preller, on the other hand, will welcome two social entrepreneurs to the campus for their lecture on 12 June. Kristina Steinhauf from urnfold and Philipp Exler from ForStory will speak on the topic "Sustainable Future?

How two founders use urns and storytelling to create to create sustainable businesses with impact".

"The first two lectures with their current topics already show that the Bayreuth Lectures are highly relevant for society and the discourse on our campus," says Prof. Dr. Martin Huber. That is why he is already looking forward to the events - and also to the expansion in the winter semester.
