The Day of Archives 2024 at the University Archives
The theme of "Food and Drink" spanned the entire programme of the University Archive's Archive Day in collaboration with the Bayreuth City Archive and the Animal Liberation Archive.
On 1 March 2024, the University Archive opened its doors wide and, together with the Bayreuth City Archive and the animal liberation archive, invited visitors to the nationwide Day of Archives. The numerous visitors had the opportunity to marvel at selected exhibits on the topic of "Food and Drink" from the three different archives in the exhibition "Aufgetischt ...zu Gast in der Mensa, am Milchpilz und bei den ersten Vegetariern in Bayreuth". With archival documents such as menus, cookery books, building plans, beer brewing offers and documents on the butchers' guild, numerous insights from different times and different media were offered to give all interested parties an understanding of the diversity of the archival treasures. The exhibition can still be viewed digitally at https://www.thinglink.com/card/18198531068091437821
The lecture by Tom Zimmermann (tierbefreiungsarchiv): "Do you have anything without meat? - A vegetarian search for traces in Bayreuth" put the audience in the perspective of a historian who has to separate urban myths from reliable sources.
The Bayreuth-Kulmbach Alt Protein Project stand of Faculty VII provided a tasty taster of the diet of the future via alternative plant-based protein sources. Because one thing became clear: a look into Bayreuth's past on the subject of "eating and drinking" led directly to current issues of food production in the 21st century and how we deal with the associated challenges.
