Elisabeth van Treeck

Musicologist Elisabeth van Treeck, who completed her doctorate under Prof. Dr. Kordula Knaus at the University of Bayreuth in 2021, was honoured with the Hermann Abert Prize of the German Society for Music Research at the beginning of October 2023. The prize serves to promote young researchers and is only awarded every four years in recognition of outstanding achievements in the field of musicology. Elisabeth van Treeck convinced the jury with her work on contemporary music, especially on the composer Olga Neuwirth. In her dissertation, she examined the sound and image dramaturgies of Neuwirth's opera Lost Highway and described them for the first time as "suspense" dramaturgy against the background of cultural, media and film theoretical points of reference. Further publications are available on Neuwirth's Le Encantadas or American Lulu. More recently, Elisabeth van Treeck has also been working intensively on Michel van der Aa's work - an anthology will be published soon. In her work, Elisabeth van Treeck advances musicological research on contemporary music in a special way through her ability to engage in interdisciplinary dialogue.

The Gesellschaft für Musikforschung (GfM) is the professional association of musicologists working in Germany in study, research and teaching. It offers all those interested in questions of music history, ethnomusicology and systematic musicology a forum for information and exchange. It currently has around 1,600 members in Germany and abroad. The society also promotes musicological research in dialogue with other disciplines. In addition, it sees itself as an organ for communicating findings from the entire field of music to a broader public.
