A place for curiosity: the new EdLab opens its doors
In the new EdLab of the Chair of Didactics of Biology and Chemistry, learning in the natural sciences becomes an experience. The modern multifunctional room combines the joy of experimentation with digital innovation and offers school pupils, students and teachers a practical environment for research and teaching.
With EdLab Bayreuth, the Chair of Biology and Chemistry Education has created a completely new and innovative learning and experimentation space that goes far beyond the boundaries of traditional classrooms. Following extensive renovation and technical refurbishment, a multifunctional science laboratory is now available that is designed equally for school pupils, teacher training students and teachers.
EdLab sees itself as an interface between school and university. School classes can experiment here in the form of a student laboratory under expert guidance and experience scientific phenomena first-hand. Two student laboratory programmes are available: ‘EdLab Energy Technology’ and ‘EdLab Microplastics’. At the same time, the space is used to train student teachers in biology and chemistry, who can test practical teaching concepts here. In addition, further training courses for teachers are planned at the EdLab.
The EdLab offers a modern laboratory environment for an entire school class, with flexible workspaces for individual, partner and group work. It enables a wide range of usage scenarios – from classic experiments to digital learning settings. This makes the EdLab a place where science can be experienced and forward-looking teaching methods take shape.
The project was financed primarily from the appointment funds of Prof. Dr. Jürgen Paul, who is also the overall director of the EdLab. The technical equipment was supplemented by funds from the DigiLLab programme, which promotes digital teaching and learning formats. The contact persons for interested parties are Dr Tessa-Marie Baierl (biology teaching) and Dr Johannes Claußnitzer (chemistry teaching). Ms Janet Lampert is responsible for coordinating appointments.
With the EdLab, the university is sending a strong signal for future-oriented education – practical, interdisciplinary and open to all learners.
