EIMAS meets Kulmbach
20 students from the European Interdisciplinary Master African Studies (EIMAS) visited Kulmbach and our new faculty there.
They met with Junior Professor Dr. Tim Dorlach and doctoral students Maryanne Wamahiu, Mwaka Mupe and Solomon Nkaka - on the one hand to get to know the faculty, but also to network and exchange ideas for upcoming projects.
The current EIMAS cohort comes from 15 different countries: Ethiopia, Botswana, Brazil, Germany, Georgia, Ghana, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Malawi, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Tanzania and Turkey. They all have very different scientific backgrounds, but are united by their interest in Africa.
If you want to take part, you have to be mobile: The first semester takes place in Porto, the second in Bayreuth, then it's off to Bordeaux, followed by a research stay or internship of at least eight weeks, preferably in Africa and not in the home country. The fourth and final semester means a return to an EIMAS partner university - Bayreuth, Porto and Bordeaux Montaigne, where the supervisor of their Master's thesis works. The program concludes with the defense of the Master's thesis.
The I in EIMAS (for interdisciplinarity) is very important in Bayreuth and is highly valued by all those involved: the supervisors of previous graduates were affiliated with Faculties II, III, IV, V and VII and have also worked together across faculties (here is an overview of the theses: https://www.eimas.eu/en/final-projects/index.html)
Nice to know: Every winter, the "EIMAS Winter School", designed and organized by the students themselves, takes place, this year for the third time at Bordeaux Montaigne University (from 18 to 20 November) on the topic of "The Battle for Sustenance: Navigating the Complexities of Food Politics in Africa".
EIMAS has been funded by the EU as an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree between 2019 to 2025.
