The Kulmbach Buddy Group set off on 7 December to visit the steam locomotive museum in Neuenmarkt together. "During a 90-minute tour of the museum, we learned a lot about the history of railways in Germany," reports mentor Silvia Sonntag. Many found it particularly exciting to learn that the first German steam locomotive ran very close by – from Fürth to Nuremberg. The tour made it clear how much the railway changed people's lives: mobility became easier, food reached new regions, and even the time had to be standardised.

Participants also gained practical insight into the technology of steam engines. In the repair pit under a locomotive, they were able to marvel at the intricate components. One highlight was the "Schiefe Ebene" (inclined plane) – the first steep section of track in Europe, which was overcome in Neuenmarkt. A detailed model railway in four rooms illustrated this technical masterpiece. "I really liked the model railway, which showed us the 'Schiefe Ebene' in miniature format," enthuses Johannes, one of the students.

The group was also impressed by the historic saloon dining car. Originally built for Adolf Hitler, it later served German chancellors from Adenauer to Brandt, as well as prominent guests such as Queen Elizabeth II. With a saloon, kitchen, study, bedroom and bathtub, it offered an exclusive insight into the travel culture of bygone times.

"The toilet and bathtub in the premium train were very interesting," says student Puja. At the end of the tour, the participants were able to take a ride on the small steam locomotive on the museum grounds. "This tour was absolutely fascinating and gave me new insights into German history and culture," summarises student Sakhi. Francis added: "I'll be back. It was very interesting to learn that the history of steam locomotives in Germany began very close by, in Nuremberg." Everyone agreed: the trip was a complete success – not only because of the exciting history of technology, but also because it promoted intercultural exchange and allowed new friendships to develop. The trip was financed by the federal programme "Demokratie leben!" (Live Democracy!).

  • The Buddy Programme:

  • Volunteers from Kulmbach and the surrounding area accompany international students from the Faculty of Life Sciences: Food, Nutrition and Health.

  • The aim is to make it easier for them to settle in Germany and to promote social, linguistic and cultural integration.

  • Joint excursions are a central component: they strengthen the community, enable intercultural exchange and bring the region to life.
