The University Council plays a key role in the life of the University of Bayreuth: not only does it elect the President and Vice-Presidents together with the Senate, it also approves proposals for the appointment of the Chancellor. In addition, it is involved in decisions on the University's statutes, the establishment, amendment and discontinuation of degree programmes, and the organisation of academic institutions and administrative units.
The University Council of the University of Bayreuth consists of seven internal members and seven external representatives from the worlds of academia, culture, business and professional practice. One of these external members over the past eight years has been Dr. Britta Padberg, an experienced science manager and currently Managing Director of THE NEW INSTITUTE Foundation. In an interview with UBTaktuell, she reflects on her time on the University Council.
UBTaktuell: What does external advice to universities in the context of the University Council mean to you?
Dr. Britta Padberg: As universities gain more autonomy, the need for external advice and constructive, critical reflection from outside also increases. It has been an honour for me to contribute my experience in science management and a real pleasure to deepen my understanding of university development in the process.
UBTaktuell: Looking back, how do you reflect on your time on the University Council of the University of Bayreuth?
Dr. Britta Padberg: Eight years is quite a journey, during which everyone involved got to know each other better and grew closer together. I feel a strong connection to the University of Bayreuth and am grateful for the trust that developed over time between the members of the Council and the University’s Executive Board.
UBTaktuell: What particular challenges do you currently see for Germany’s higher education landscape, and how would you assess the University of Bayreuth’s position?
Dr. Britta Padberg: Budget constraints, demographic change, growing competition in the higher education sector, increasing demands and expectations placed on universities, and global geopolitical challenges – these are just some of the issues currently facing universities. With its diverse research profile and strong team spirit, the University of Bayreuth is well equipped to face these challenges with confidence. The Executive Board’s task will continue to be to nurture and build on these strengths.
UBTaktuell: What will you personally take away from your time on the University Council?
Dr. Britta Padberg: Many interesting encounters and conversations, and the regular visits to a beautiful city. I’ll also miss Franconian hospitality.
UBTaktuell: Is there a message you’d like to share with the members of the University of Bayreuth?
Dr. Britta Padberg: At a mid-sized university, team spirit is key. I wish the University of Bayreuth continued success, with all groups actively involved in shaping its future.
