We remain a Fairtrade University!
The university is thus positioning itself as an important social actor and a driving force for fair and economically sustainable development worldwide.
The University of Bayreuth has already been a Fairtrade University since 2016. The GreenCampus team is pleased to announce that the title was recently recertified for the next two years. The application was submitted in September 2022, positioning the university as an important social actor and driving force for fair and economically sustainable development worldwide. It identifies with the Fairtrade goal of working for improved living and working conditions for the people involved in production in the growing countries. Farmers in Africa, Latin America and Asia are particularly affected. The Fairtrade label ensures them, for example, a constant minimum wage for their products. In addition, Fairtrade offers them training on climate protection and adaptation so that they can better respond to these challenges in their agriculture.
The University of Bayreuth (in cooperation with the Studierendenwerk Oberfranken) is committed to fair trade at various levels, for example by offering fair products in the canteen or in vending machines. In addition, information events on the topic of fair trade are held regularly. The latter, in particular, aims to educate and raise awareness of the international production conditions of our food. In 2022, for example, a fair breakfast was held in the Transition House in cooperation with the FairActivists of the University of Bayreuth to raise awareness about fair trade food.
The sustainability office of the GreenCampus University is responsible for compliance with the criteria required for the certificate in cooperation with the FairActivists and the steering group set up for this purpose.
In order to continue to inform about the topic of Fairtrade in the future, exciting events are also planned for this year. In addition, there will be a recertification ceremony.
