Prof. Dr. Jens Strüker

"The interplay of theory and practice in research and teaching is a particular preoccupation of mine. Students should already learn how to perform scientific work during their studies, but at the same time, be optimally prepared for a possible career outside the University," says Prof. Dr. Jens Strüker, describing the aim of his work with students.

Since September 2020, Prof. Dr. Jens Strüker has been Professor of Information Systems & Digital Energy Management at the University of Bayreuth. In addition, he holds a leading position in the Information Systems Management project group at the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Information Technology (FIT).

Strüker holds a degree in economics and history (M.A.) and a doctorate in information systems management. After a research stay at SAP Labs in Palo Alto (USA) in 2008/09, he habilitated in information systems management and economics at the University of Freiburg in 2012. At Hochschule Fresenius University of Applied Sciences in Frankfurt, Strüker established and managed the Institute of Energy Economics (INEWI) from 2013 to 2020. His research focuses on the economic potential of digital technologies such as artificial intelligence and blockchain for the energy industry. Specifically, he investigates the degrees of freedom information technology offers real-time energy economics, and in effective climate protection. "An essential prerequisite for the transformation of the energy system towards more sustainability is the development of digital infrastructure for the opening of energy markets", said Strüker. For the German Energy Agency, dena, he and his team are currently investigating how PV roof systems, for example, can dynamically switch between self-supply and the sale of electricity using blockchain technology.

According to Strüker, excellent research conditions result from his team’s tight integration with the Information Systems Management project group of the Fraunhofer FIT in Bayreuth, as well as the possibilities for cooperation at the University of Bayreuth, such as with the Bavarian Centre for Battery Technology (BayBatt).
