The first students have already graduated from Faculty VII at the University of Bayreuth. Alina Gafurova is one of them. She had transferred from the University of Halle-Wittenberg to Kulmbach in October 2021 for the Master's programme "Global Food, Nutrition and Health". "The Master's programme Global Food, Nutrition and Heath and the campus itself are new and there is still a very flexible and open culture," says Gafurova.

"The programme offers an exceptional opportunity to study with a diverse group of international students from different academic backgrounds. The interdisciplinary nature of our degree also allows us to explore global health issues in the fields of politics, law and sustainability. In addition, the wide range of elective modules offers everyone the opportunity to tailor their study plan to their interests and specialisms."

With Alina Gafurova, five Master's students have already graduated from Kulmbach, and two more are about to graduate. 38 Master's theses are also already registered. The 18 young people who started in November 2020 have today become 212 enrolled students as well as several doctoral students - with enrolment for the winter semester 2023/24 just underway.

"We are highly satisfied with the development of our faculty: We now have twelve professors in Kulmbach, one professorship is about to be filled and others are currently in the appointment process," says Prof. Dr Janin Henkel-Oberländer, Dean of the Faculty of Life Sciences: Food, Nutrition and Health.

"With our research topics, we are absolutely on the cutting edge: plant science for climate-adapted seeds, new ingredients of traditional foods and potential alternatives, the optimisation of regional value chains, food communication and legal questions about food - whether about beer or novel foods such as 'in vitro meat', to name just a few examples. These are all current topics in society. And the growing student numbers prove us right."

The Dean's enthusiasm was obviously also felt by Alina Gafurova. "I particularly liked the high level of commitment of the professors. I also liked the opportunity to write an interdisciplinary Master's thesis," she says. "For example, I wrote my thesis together with the Chair of Law and the Chair of Biochemistry of Nutrition."

The students at Faculty VII come from a total of 38 countries and live partly in Bayreuth and partly in Kulmbach. Some, mainly Bachelor's students from the region, also commute from the district or the surrounding area.
