Value Co-Creation in Sport Management – A New Logic in a Changing Society
In September 2019, the University of Bayreuth launched an innovative project that focuses on creating massive open online courses, MOOCs, in key academic areas.
A MOOC is an educational resource available worldwide and free of charge, which includes interactive elements, e.g. forum discussions, video conferences, and video with interlaced feedback. These online courses are excellent learning tools that help learners gain knowledge and skills for different purposes: exam preparation, university preparation, academic development, career enhancement, career change, corporate training, personal learning, and more.
The University of Bayreuth recognizes the imperative task of higher education institutions to offer quality online courses, and in March 2020 it became a member of edX — an educational platform founded by Harvard University and MIT. edX is a non-profit organization that offers over 3000 online courses to more than 34 million learners from all over the world.

The course focuses on the innovative logic of value co-creation, which builds on the traditional approach, known as the logic of sport products. The course starts with a comprehensive overview of the logic of sport products and its limitations, which point to the importance of a new way of thinking in sport management.
Consequently, the logic of value co-creation is explained by referring to research results about ticketing, branding and sponsoring. During the course, participants get a deeper understanding of the new logic of value co-creation with practical applications, innovative approaches and case studies, and learn about managerial implications from interviews with experts in this field. Finally, the course tackles future challenges in sport management by using the example of sustainability and circular economy in sport.
Besides the input phases in forms of texts, videos, podcasts and graphics, participants have the possibility to test their knowledge with interactive quizzes and engage in forum discussions with their course fellows. The course is self-paced, which means that learners decide how fast they want to complete it, and with three optional short exams there is the possibility to receive an official edX certificate for this course. Are you a passionate sport lover interested in exploring a new innovative logic in sport management?
