In March 2022, the External Advisory Board of the Bayreuth Humboldt Centre held their annual Selection Meeting for Fellowships. In a competitive selection process, the seven highly renowned members of the Advisory Board awarded four Fellowships to excellent researchers from Canada, Nigeria, South Africa, and the United States. The successful two Senior and two Junior Fellows are planning to come to the University of Bayreuth in 2022 and 2023 in order to collaborate in joint research projects with their local hosts. They are experts in mechanical engineering, computational biology, physics, and security studies. Their innovative and sustainable proposals convinced the members of the Advisory Board especially since their collaborations will have a long-term impact on research at the University of Bayreuth.

“Now that global mobility is recovering, we are expecting a boost for our research collaborations. We are happy that this year some fellows and grantees who - due to the pandemic - have not been able to come to date will now be travelling to Bayreuth. After months of lacking opportunities to connect with their peers, the newly selected Senior and Junior Fellows are highly motivated to implement their research project at the University of Bayreuth and to explore networking possibilities beyond the collaboration with their hosts” says Prof. Dr. Anna Köhler, Executive Director of the Bayreuth Humboldt Centre.

Junior Fellows 2022

Dr. Marilize Everts, Senior Lecturer at the University of Pretoria, South Africa, and her host, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dieter Brüggemann, Center of Energy Technology, will collaborate on the project “Pool boiling characteristics to investigate single-phase flow through tubes with a constant surface temperature”.

Dr. Nathaniel Umukoro, Senior Lecturer at the Edo State University, Benin City, Nigeria, and his host, Prof. Dr. Tim Dorlach, Global Nutrition and Health, will work on the project “Food and Welfare: Assessing Nigeria’s Food Security Policies from a Social Policy Perspective”.

Senior Fellows 2022

Prof. Dr. Andrey Grigoriev, Professor at Rutgers University, USA, and his host, Prof. Dr. Claus D. Kuhn, RNA Biochemistry, will analyse “Predictive models of small RNA-directed mRNA surveillance in planarians”.

Prof. Dr. Jean-Michel Ménard, Associate Professor at the University of Ottawa, Canada, and his hosts, Prof. Dr. Markus Lippitz, Experimental Physics III, and Prof. Dr. Georg Herink, ultrafast dynamics, will work on the project “Quantum THz photonics: using strongly coupled vibrations to modulate optical absorption”.

The Office of the Bayreuth Humboldt Centre advises all Fellows and Grantees as well as their hosts. It prepares their stays in Bayreuth in close collaboration with the Welcome Services. At present, a Call for Applications for the programme “Strategic Scientific Workshops” is open until May 11, 2022. https://www.humboldt-centre.uni-bayreuth.de/en/applications/index.php

The Bayreuth Humboldt Centre has recently published the new edition of the “Bayreuth Humboldt Centre Prospectus 2022”. It illustrates all scientific projects the Bayreuth Humboldt Centre has sponsored in 2021. In addition, the Prospectus presents the new Short Term Grantees and the thrilling research they will pursue with their hosts in Bayreuth in 2022. Have a look at our prospectus on
