STOP violence against women! Actions on 25 November in Bayreuth
From 13:00 on 25 January 2023, there will be three stands along Maximilianstraße (at Reichshof, Dino and Urweltmuseum) to raise awareness about gender-specific and gender-based violence against women and girls. The counselling centres will provide information about help services.
The stands will be run by the women's refuge, the domestic violence intervention centre, the Bayreuth City Police Headquarters, the Protestant Deanery Women's Representative, AVALON and the Equal Opportunities Officer of the City of Bayreuth as well as WEISSEN RING. From 16:30 to 17:00, a prayer service will be held in the Heilig Dreifaltigkeit church (Kirchplatz 1). From 17:00 to 17:30, participants and interested parties will form a chain of lights between the town church and Sternplatz. You are welcome to bring candles and/or wear orange-coloured clothing or accessories.
Afterwards, there will also be an evening event with words of welcome (Dr Andreas Zippel, second mayor, Prof. Dr Heike Feldhaar, University Women's Representative and Martin Prechtl, Deputy Head of the Police Headquarters Upper Franconia) and short readings with tea and biscuits in the Klimalounge (Richard-Wagner-Straße 4-6, 1st floor), which is co-organised by the Equal Opportunities Service Office of the University of Bayreuth, Catcalls of Bayreuth and Bastian Raithel from the Klimalounge. The Iwalewahaus (Wölfelstraße 2) will be illuminated in orange from 25 November to 10 December.
Under the slogan "STOP Violence against Women!", the UN campaign "Orange the World" has been raising awareness and sending a signal against violence against women, girls, queer and trans people since 1991 between 25 November, the International Day against Violence against Women, and 10 December, Human Rights Day.
Gender-specific or gender-based violence is commonplace in the patriarchal structures of our society. UN Women Germany write on their homepage that "in Germany [...] every third woman is affected by physical and/or sexualised violence at least once in her life, that is more than 12 million women. Every 4 minutes, a woman in Germany experiences violence from her partner or ex-partner. Every third day, a man kills his (ex-)partner. More than half of all women avoid certain places after dark and feel unsafe." (https://unwomen.de/orange-the-world-2023/; 19.10.2023) Violence in relationships, but also in public and digital spaces, affects many women, girls, queer and trans people - and it also happens in Bayreuth. In the city in a park or café, at work or in a public authority, at university or on campus, at home or online. Any place can become a crime scene. The Action Alliance of the City of Bayreuth cordially invites all interested and solidary people to our events.
