Construction for new student residence has begun
The Studentenwerk Oberfranken is building a new student residence in the direct vicinity of the campus. The future residents will be on campus in just a few minutes on foot.
Coming from the city, you can see the construction site on the left: the new student residence at Sendelbach is being built directly opposite the university. 185 individual flats are to be built there and will be ready for occupancy as early as the winter semester of 2024/25. "The new building will replace the Frankengut student residence," explains Josef Tost, head of the Upper Franconia Student Union. "The Frankengut residence is no longer rentable for our purposes. A successor building is planned for the space there, but we're waiting to see how demand develops." For the time being, the Studentenwerk Oberfranken has made the buildings in Frankengutstraße available elsewhere for social purposes.
The new student residence at Sendelbach will cost around 20 million euros. Half of the building is on stilts so that cars can be parked under this part of the building. This makes ideal use of the available space.
The Studentenwerk Oberfranken operates a total of six student residences in Bayreuth. "There is also a contingent of places reserved for students in Kulmbach in the student residence currently under construction," says Tost. The student residence in Kulmbach is still being planned. It will certainly take at least a year longer to complete it. The new student residence in Bayreuth is scheduled for completion on 31 August 2024. Then the flats will be rented for 260 euros plus incidental costs. "We hope that the ancillary costs will then have levelled off again at a somewhat lower level," says Tost. "All in all, a flat should then be available to students for around 340 euros, including all ancillary costs such as internet and the like."
