University election results are in

Now that the ballots have all been counted, it is clear that the composition of the student parliament (Stupa) will change slightly for the winter semester 2023/24. The GHG (Green University Group) will have eight representatives in the Stupa in future. These are Nicola Bretschneider, Felicitas Modlmayr, Christopher Grell, Johanna Goer, Jean Aristid Banyurwahe, Paula Mayer, Emily Bauer and Lennart Fiedler. In the last election, the GHG had received six mandates.

So far, 17 of the 31 Stupa mandates had been allocated via the lists of the political university groups; the other 14 members are two student representatives from each of the seven faculties. In the 2023 election, the number of representatives from political university groups will be 20. This is due to a change in the basic regulations of the University of Bayreuth. Because the students of the seventh faculty also send two student representatives to the Stupa, the number of members had to be adjusted so that the intended ratio of political university groups and student representatives is again in the right proportion.

The Juso Hochschulgruppe also received one more mandate than in last year's election and now has five Stupa members: Pia Riepl-Bauer, Yannick Nahak, Marius Elle, Katharina Peipp and Cem Sivrikaya. The Liberal University Group (LHG) remains with four clients: Ayse Ünlüyol, Lukas Bodenschatz, Max Gießübel and Bettina Firmke. Likewise, the RCDS keeps its three seats. Annika Bracht, Noel Boldin and Adrian Henry Bär will enter the Stupa for the RCDS. The turnout was 14.67 per cent. The other members of the Stupa are made up of the student representatives. On 24 July, the student parliament will hold its constituent meeting, at which the new executive board will be elected.

The employees of the university have also elected the university council, the senate and the faculty councils.

  • University Council: The turnout of full-time university teachers for the University Council was over 70 percent. Prof. Dr. Stefan Schuster (Chair of Animal Physiology) received the most votes. He will be joined on the University Council for the first time by Prof. Dr. Matthias Weiss (Chair of Experimental Physics I), as well as Prof. Dr. Knut Werner Lange (Civil Law V) and, most recently, Prof. Dr. Erdmute Alber (Chair of Social Anthropology). Dr. Steffen Schmidt (Structural Biology/Bioinformatics) remains the representative of the academic staff and doctoral students.

The University Council has among others the following tasks: Together with the Senate, the University Council elects the President and the four Vice-Presidents and decides on the proposals for the appointment of the Chancellor. The University Council is also consulted before decisions are made on the basic regulations of the University of Bayreuth and gives its opinion on the establishment, amendment and cancellation of study programmes as well as on the establishment, amendment or cancellation of academic institutions and operating units by the University Management. At the request of the university management and with the approval of the Senate, the University Council decides on proposals for the division of the university into faculties. In addition, the University Council acts in an advisory capacity with regard to the strategic development planning of the university.

  • Senate: Prof. Dr. Volker Ulm (Chair of Mathematics and Didactics), Prof. Dr. Andreas Greiner (Chair of Macromolecular Chemistry II), Prof. Dr. Jörg Schlüchtermann (Chair of Business Administration V), Prof. Dr. Susan Arndt (Chair of English Literature and Anglophone Literatures) and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Gerhard Fischerauer (Chair of Measurement and Control Technology) represent the full-time university teachers in the Senate. Representatives of the academic staff will be Dr.-Ing. Michael Frisch (Sports Science I) and Manuel Brinkmann (Business Administration I). With a voter turnout of 31.82 percent, the academic staff once again elected Carmela Herrmann to the Senate.

The Senate of the University of Bayreuth decides on research priorities and applications for the establishment of Collaborative Research Centres and Research Training Groups. In addition, the Senate gives its opinion on appointment proposals.
