It's an anniversary: For the fifteenth time in a row, the Vishay Technology Award is being presented to outstanding students at the Bayreuth Faculty of Engineering. The Vishay company wants to set an example and show how important the engineering profession is and how urgently good engineers are needed for Upper Franconia as an industrial location. Vishay is a globally active manufacturer of electronic components that is listed on the US stock exchange and has its European headquarters in Selb.

This year, three students will receive prizes totalling 4,000 euros. The ceremony will once again take place in Vishay's company restaurant.

The budding engineers from Bayreuth will receive the awards from Mrs. Martina Winterwerber, Managing Director of Vishay Electronic GmbH. Professors Gerhard Fischerauer and Ralf Moos, who are both jury members of the Faculty of Engineering, will attend the award ceremony from Bayreuth.

The award winners are among the best students of their year and demonstrate very good academic performance in a manner appropriate for an award winner. Outstanding performance in subjects of particular importance to Vishay is given higher weighting.

In a joint vote between Martina Winterwerber, Managing Director of Vishay Electronic GmbH, and the selection committee of the Faculty of Engineering, consisting of Professors Gerhard Fischerauer and Ralf Moos, a selection was made from several possible candidates. As a result, the following prizes were awarded:

1st prize (€2,000):

Mr Lars Müller

Joint 2nd prize (1000 € each):

Mr Daniel Dotzel and Mr Johannes Mühlbauer

The Vishay Technology Award

The shortage of engineers in Germany is particularly affecting the industrial region of Upper Franconia. Vishay Electronic GmbH and the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Bayreuth want to counteract this lack of engineers and set clearly visible signs.

Therefore, Vishay Electronic GmbH has donated the Vishay Technology Award, which is endowed with 4,000 euros. Every year, prize winners are selected from students on the Bayreuth engineering courses. This is the fifteenth time in a row that the Vishay Technology Prize has been awarded. The jury consists of a joint committee of representatives of the Vishay company, a listed global corporation from Malvern in the USA, whose European headquarters are located in Selb in Upper Franconia, and Bayreuth professors from the Faculty of Engineering, Fischerauer and Moos, who are particularly close to the business areas of Vishay Electronic GmbH "discrete semiconductor components" and "passive electronic components".

The concept of the Vishay Technology Award

As in the past fourteen years, the Vishay Technology Prize 2022/2023 was awarded to students of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Bayreuth whose academic achievements in the first semesters of study stood out. Since the personal development from pupil to student must be mastered in this stage of studies and at the same time those fundamentals are taught that are particularly important with regard to the later engineering profession, this stage of studies is also considered the most difficult. To have done well here is a particularly good basis not only for further studies, but also for one's later career.

The potential award winners had to be among the best students of their year and had to have achieved a balanced academic performance in a time frame appropriate for an award winner, with particular emphasis on outstanding results in the subjects that are particularly important for the Vishay company.

About Vishay

With an annual turnover of 2.4 billion dollars, the Vishay Group is one of the world's leading manufacturers of electronic components and currently employs around 23,000 people. Vishay Intertechnology Inc. is a listed American company whose European headquarters are located in Selb, Upper Franconia. Two production facilities are located at the Selb site.

It is of particular concern to Vishay to maintain intensive contacts with the nearest university offering technical courses of study and thus to promote the availability of well-trained engineers.

To the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Bayreuth:

The Faculty of Engineering is the faculty at the University of Bayreuth that brings the results from basic research into application by means of engineering research. The Faculty of Engineering is therefore interdisciplinary in nature and has a particular breadth of disciplines. Unlike at the large technical universities, many different disciplines are represented in Bayreuth's Faculty of Engineering. The spatial proximity leads to interdisciplinary and application-oriented research projects that would be difficult to achieve elsewhere. Therefore, there is a particularly large potential for innovation here. There are also joint research projects between the Faculty of Engineering and Vishay.

The breadth of the disciplines represented is also used in teaching: in Bayreuth, future engineers receive a broad and well-founded education (Bachelor's area), which they can deepen in selected areas in a research-related exemplary manner (Master's area). In this way, they become sought-after experts for the challenges of today and tomorrow with the very best career opportunities.

Specifically, the Faculty of Engineering currently offers the following degree programmes (in part also jointly with other faculties):

Bachelor's degree programmes

  • Engineering Science
  • Electrical Engineering and Information Systems Technology
  • Materials Science and Materials Engineering
  • Industrial Engineering
  • Environmental and Resource Technology
