Successful model: supplementary studies in sustainability
The third year of the supplementary study programme in sustainability at the University of Bayreuth has just been successfully completed. You can still apply for the next round until 14 April.
The projects submitted by the students in the supplementary sustainability course are exciting, and if they are implemented, they can be real gamechangers. To name just a few examples: A digital educational concept on the topic of global challenges and solutions was combined with a walking tour (start date on 30.03.2023, cooperation with Transitionhaus Bayreuth, via Actionbound app). , a campus flea market is to raise awareness for sustainable consumption (expected at the end of the summer semester 2023, cooperation with GreenCampus), a bike-sharing system is to transform mobility in Bayreuth and an idea to make the journey to the world-famous climbing rocks in Franconian Switzerland more sustainable (in cooperation with Initiative Ecopoint). A special feature: most of the projects are quasi a direct implementation of the university's Third Mission. The popularity of the programme is reflected in the unchanged high number of participants: in the winter semester there were 162.
The purpose of the final projects is to use the knowledge gained in the additional studies to conceptualise and realise ideas that have a direct impact on society and not "just" on our campus.
Why study sustainability?
This additional study programme provides students with key qualifications in the field of sustainability and offers the opportunity to acquire and deepen knowledge in this area. Sustainability is understood as a broad concept and is not limited to the ecological, economic and social perspectives, but also includes technology, culture, philosophy, health care, law and other disciplines. In addition to the theoretical basics, practical application is also part of the training. The aim of the additional studies is for students to view sustainable issues critically and to be able to apply the acquired knowledge flexibly. The additional qualification is proven in the form of a graded certificate.
The additional study programme Sustainability is offered by the Faculty of Biology, Chemistry and Geosciences in cooperation with the Faculty of Law and Economics, the Faculty of Linguistics and Literature and the Faculty of Cultural Studies at the University of Bayreuth and is open to all students across all faculties.
Enrolment for the summer semester 2023 is already open for all students of the University of Bayreuth. Participants who want to expand their profile in the field of sustainability and make a difference are welcome.
