The Studium Generale offers all students insights into current socially and academically relevant areas beyond their own degree programme, explains Prof. Dr. Martin Huber, Vice President Teaching and Students, who developed the new Studium Generale with his team.

A central component of the Studium Generale are the Bayreuth Lectures: The Bayreuth Lectures take place three Mondays a semester from 6 to 8 p.m. in H 15 and focus on current academic topics from the areas of the digital world, entrepreneurship & innovation, gender & diversity, sustainability and philosophy of science. The speakers come to the University of Bayreuth at the invitation of Bayreuth researchers. The dates for the lectures have already been set: 6 November 2023, 4 December 2023, 15 January 2024.

This winter semester, the Bayreuth Lectures will address questions such as: How can I make my sustainable start-up successful? How do we manage the energy transition in the region? What is AI and how does it work?

Detailed information on the lectures can be found here.

Anyone can listen

In principle, the Studium Generale can be attended by anyone who is enrolled at the University of Bayreuth - whether in a Bachelor's or Master's degree programme or in a state examination programme. The Bayreuth Lectures can be attended without registration, but if you want to take part in the Studium Generale, you have to register via cmlife.
Vice President Huber explains who can have the Studium Generale credited to their degree programme: "If the degree programme has defined a window for free credits, the credit points from the Studium Generale (5, 10 or max. 15 LP) can be brought in there to the extent provided," he says. As a rule, the module handbook states whether a free area is provided for. "If you are unsure whether the degree programme allows credits from the Studium Generale, it is best to ask the person responsible for the degree programme." If no credit points can be transferred, the achievements from the Studium Generale are not lost, because they will be recorded in the Transcript of Records in any case.

Earn credit points

The credit points for the Studium Generale can be acquired in three module areas (A, B and C). Module A consists of a Bayreuth Lecture and attendance of the associated one-time accompanying format on the following Monday (18-20 in H 15) as well as a written examination.

Module B can be taken from April 2024 onwards and offers an accompanying seminar (2 SWS), which thematically deepens one of the Bayreuth Lectures.

Module area C (starting in April 2024) comprises courses from the existing range of courses that are independent of the Bayreuth Lectures and have an introductory character or contain a general introductory section so that students from outside the subject area can also follow the course content.

"With this new offer, we want to give students the opportunity to look beyond the horizon of their own field of study, to acquire interdisciplinary foresight and also to receive credit points for it," explains Huber.

Further information on registering for Studium Generale and an FAQ can be found on the website www.uni-bayreuth.de/studium-generale.

All courses for the Studium Generale can be viewed after registration in cm life under active studies.
