Prof. Dr.-Ing. Stefan Schafföner studied process engineering at Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg, where he also received his doctorate in the field of ceramics, glass, and construction material technology in 2015. During his studies and immediately after graduation, he completed a one-year Chinese course at Tsinghua University and Huazhong University of Science and Technology. Between April 2017 and August 2018, he conducted research at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim as part of a DFG (German Research Foundation) research fellowship. In August 2018, he was appointed Assistant Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Connecticut.

Together with the highly motivated Ceramic Materials team, I would like to further expand research and make a significant contribution to achieving our energy and climate goals over the coming years.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Stefan Schafföner

His research focuses on the composition and process engineering of ceramic materials for high-temperature processes, as well as their characterisation and testing technology. In his projects to date, he has taken the development of novel ceramic materials, processes, and components for the production technology of lightweight materials, and for process and energy technology, all the way from basic research to successful industrial application.

“What particularly motivates me about this work is that ceramic materials, due to their resistance to wear and corrosion, are often used where other materials fail. They are therefore crucial for greater energy and resource efficiency in production technology and in the transport sector”, explains Prof. Dr.-Ing. Stefan Schafföner. "Students will benefit even more from the excellent study conditions at the research group, and so be prepared for professional life in the best possible way."
